To support local authorities achieve the flexible, skilled workforce they will need to meet future challenges the LGA Group have been working hard to produce robust and useful data relating to the local government workforce. At the same time we are working with partners to minimise the burden of data collection centrally and improve the quality of workforce data locally.

  • Local Government Workforce Survey 2011

    The LGA will use findings from the 2011 workforce survey to help support local authorities. This summary report provides data on key workforce metrics.

  • Facts and Figures

    The number of people employed in local government fell sharply over the past two years as councils tightened their belts during the recession. Read our new report 'Local Government Pay and Workforce Facts and Figures 2010/11'.

  • ONS Quarterly Public Sector Employment Survey

    This section provides data from the ONS Quarterly Public Sector Employment Survey. This includes the headcount, FTE, gender and contract status of all directly employed local authority staff in England and Wales.

  • Local Government Workforce Survey 2010

    The results of the Local Government Workforce Survey 2010 have now been published. The survey was undertaken in the summer of 2010 and achieved a response rate of 59 per cent. The findings show that councils had already prepared to make savings to their workforce costs in advance of the spending review.

  • Health, Work and Well-being in Local Authorities

    This is a Department of Health-funded study which demonstrates to authorities what can be done in terms of the health and well-being of their workforce, and the benefits that brings to council staff and service delivery.

  • Sickness Absence and Causes Survey 2009

    This survey was conducted by LGA Analysis and Research, on behalf of the Local Government Employers (LGE). The latest survey has found that sickness absence has not increased, and more authorities are embracing the Health and Safety Executive management standards for work related stress.
